Attached is a copy of the checklist rubric used by Terry Stuartevant to mark lab summaries. Instructions for students can be found online at http://denethor.wlu.ca/common/summary.shtml. This simple checklist approach could be used to quickly and efficiently mark lesson/lab summaries, reading reflections, etc.
Wednesday March 2, 2011 Film Reviews - To deepen student understanding of and to promote reflection on life in developing countries (not what students experience at resorts), Dr. Judy Bates requires students to prepare film reviews on a select number of films previewed in class. The attached document includes the instructions given to students. The films themselves are recent, cover topics related to lecture/reading materials, and focus on different parts of the devloping world. Students take notes during the video and discuss the material in the same or next class.

In our meeting today, Professor Leanne Haggarty, SBE, talked about the PPT slides she uses at the beginning of her introduction to business class to aid students in developing learning and studying skills for her course. The PPT document is provided below for others to browse.
Jeanette McDonald also shared five questions designed to help students become critical readers. The questions as well as how a process and options for orienting students to their use is provided in the attached PDF document.
Bob Jefferson shared a set of slides used during the first class/week of term to set guidelines and expectations for students and provide information about the course, study/learning skills (e.g., reading the textbook), and course tools (e.g., clickers).
Chris Anderson shared a copy of his hat he uses to raise student awareness and test their knowledge of plagiarism. Also attached is the The in-class plagiarism exercise is mandatory and is held in week three before before the first written assignment is due. Students must complete the exercise before he will grade their written work. For those who miss it, he makes it available on mylearningspace posting the answers on my door. (NB: the majority of students get question three wrong; rarely do students get all questions correct). Chris also allows students to see the originality report for their first paper to reinforce the idea of what is/is not plagiarism; they do not get this option for the second paper. If you have any questions/comments/advice, please let me know. The original source for the exercise is listed on the final slide.
